EGX Erases October Recovery as Institutional Selling Hits Smaller Stocks

Must read

CAIRO, October 12, 2026 — The Egyptian Exchange extended its correction on Monday, with EGX30 falling 1.14% to 51,613.92, following Sunday’s 1.99% decline and reversing the recovery that had lifted the benchmark to 53,911.10 on October 4.

The EGX70 EWI plunged 4.33% to 18,421.83, while EGX100 EWI lost 3.52% to 24,525.91. Market capitalization declined approximately EGP70bn to EGP4.052tn, bringing the two-session loss to nearly EGP152bn, according to closing figures published by Arab Finance and Egypt Today.

Selling was widespread. Of 222 traded shares, 197 declined, 16 advanced and nine were unchanged. Equity turnover increased to EGP7.434bn from EGP6.790bn on Sunday, with approximately 2.08bn shares changing hands across 217,623 transactions. Enterprise reported trading value about 34.5% below its 90-day average.

Institutions Sell as Retail Investors Absorb Losses

Egyptian investors recorded net equity sales of EGP42.4mn, while foreign investors sold EGP25.5mn and Arab investors purchased EGP67.9mn, according to Arab Finance’s closing figures.

The reported institutional breakdown showed Egyptian institutions selling approximately EGP127.5mn, against EGP85.1mn of purchases by Egyptian individuals. Foreign and Arab institutions also recorded net sales, bringing combined institutional selling to approximately EGP187.6mn, offset by retail purchases.

Institutions accounted for 26.1% of trading activity, up from 15.8% on Sunday, while individual investors represented 73.9%.

The shift is significant. Sunday’s correction was dominated by Egyptian institutional selling. Monday’s reported figures indicate broader institutional withdrawals across nationality groups, even as retail investors continued buying.

The resulting deterioration was most severe outside the benchmark’s largest constituents. EGX70’s 4.33% decline was almost four times EGX30’s percentage loss, indicating that selling pressure had spread decisively into smaller and medium-sized companies.

Early-October Rebound Fully Reversed

Monday’s trading initially brought a recovery attempt before renewed selling drove EGX30 towards 51,543. The index closed at 51,613.92, below its September 30 closing level of 51,894.83.

The sequence marks a clear reversal. EGX30 recovered 2,016 points between September 30 and October 4, then surrendered those gains over the following sessions. Sunday’s sell-off broke the 53,000 level; Monday’s decline eliminated the remaining recovery.

The increase in equity turnover during a second consecutive session of heavy losses reinforces the deterioration. More shares were changing hands, but stronger participation did not produce price stability.

Pound Weakens as Monetary Conditions Remain Restrictive

Currency pressure compounded the market’s weakness. The dollar was reported at approximately EGP52.60 buying and EGP52.74 selling in Monday’s central-bank closing quotations, extending its appreciation against the pound. Exchange-rate reports published earlier in the day showed lower quotations, reflecting the timing of the respective observations.

The Central Bank of Egypt continues to maintain overnight deposit and lending rates at 19% and 20%, respectively, with its main-operation rate at 19.5%.

In a separate regulatory development, the CBE instructed banks to prevent consumer-finance companies from using bank credit facilities to fund transactions prohibited by the Financial Regulatory Authority, including purchases of gold and other precious metals. The measure implements existing consumer-finance restrictions rather than a general tightening of bank lending, and no direct connection to Monday’s equity decline has been established.

Government securities remain an important alternative for investors facing equity volatility. The latest reported EGX Treasury Bond Index reading indicated relative stability, although comparable final Monday foreign and Arab secondary-debt flows were not independently established.

Correction Replaces Recovery

Monday’s session materially changes the market outlook. The late-September correction, briefly interrupted by the October 1–4 rebound, has resumed with greater pressure on smaller companies and continued institutional selling.

EGX30’s fall below 51,895 removes the immediate evidence that the October recovery had established a durable base. A sustained return above 53,000, accompanied by improving breadth, stronger institutional participation and more stable currency conditions, would be needed to restore confidence.

The decisive concern is no longer simply the benchmarks decline, but the widening weakness beneath it. With the October recovery erased and institutions continuing to sell, Egyptian equities must rebuild demand across the broader market before another rebound can be regarded as sustainable.
