Egypt’s e-finance Plans $100mn Digital Investment as Telecom Partnership Opens New Growth Opportunities

Must read

CAIRO, Egypt’s e-finance for Digital and Financial Investments plans to invest up to $100 million during 2027–28 in digital infrastructure and financial services, chairman and chief executive Ibrahim Sarhan announced on Saturday, as the company seeks to expand government technology platforms and enter new regional markets.

Speaking at the opening of Cairo ICT 2026 on November 7, Sarhan said the investment programme would strengthen the digital platforms operated by the group in cooperation with Egyptian government institutions while supporting its wider commercial expansion.

In subsequent remarks reported by Hapi, Sarhan specified that approximately 70% of the planned investment, equivalent to $70 million, would be allocated to digital infrastructure, with the remaining $30 million directed towards non-bank financial services.

The infrastructure programme will focus on upgrading and protecting existing digital platforms, including government payment and collection systems, while expanding cloud computing capabilities and associated artificial intelligence and cybersecurity services.

The financial-services component will support expansion into activities including microfinance and consumer finance. Sarhan said e-finance was evaluating potential acquisitions but had not identified targets or announced binding transactions.

The group is also looking to export its Egyptian-developed digital platforms and services, with Lebanon and Iraq among its priority markets. Sarhan identified 2027 as the target for entering Iraq.

The expansion plans were accompanied by a new memorandum of understanding signed with Telecom Egypt on November 7, witnessed by Communications Minister Raafat Hendy.

The agreement brings together Telecom Egypt’s telecommunications networks, data-centre and cloud infrastructure with e-finance’s experience in government financial networks, digital payments, identity verification and software platforms.

The companies intend to explore integrated digital services for government institutions and commercial customers. No financial value or binding capital commitment was disclosed for the agreement.

The proposed spending follows a period of strong financial growth. e-finance reported consolidated revenue of EGP 4.17 billion in the first half of 2026, up 29.3% year on year, while net profit attributable to shareholders rose 64.5% to approximately EGP 1.81 billion.

The investment programme could strengthen Egypt’s capacity to operate critical digital infrastructure domestically while creating opportunities to export government technology and financial services.

For e-finance, regional expansion would also broaden revenue sources beyond its established domestic operations, although successful entry into foreign markets will require local regulatory approvals and commercial contracts.

The $100 million remains a planned investment allocation rather than confirmed completed expenditure. Its economic impact will depend on actual capital deployment, operational improvements, successful acquisitions and revenue generated from overseas contracts.
