The 2026 FIE World Fencing Championships, held in Hong Kong from July 22 to 30, concluded with Kazakhstan winning the men’s team épée world title, Switzerland taking silver and Egypt claiming the bronze medal after defeating Israel in a dramatic bronze-medal match. The championships brought together more than 1,000 fencers from over 100 countries and territories to compete across the six Olympic fencing disciplines.
Egypt claimed the bronze with a 39-38 victory over Israel in a match decided by a golden touch after the teams finished level at 38-38 following the regulation nine bouts. The first valid hit scored during the priority period secured Egypt’s place on the World Championship podium.
The Egyptian quartet of Olympic medallist Mohamed El-Sayed, Youssef Shamel, Mahmoud Mohsen and Mahmoud El-Sayed advanced through the tournament by defeating Portugal (44-33) in the round of 32, edging Spain (36-35) in the last 16 and overcoming Russia (45-35) in the quarter-finals. Egypt’s campaign ended with a 41-32 semi-final defeat to eventual champions Kazakhstan before the team returned to defeat Israel and secure the bronze medal.
Entering the championships as the FIE’s top-ranked men’s team épée nation, Egypt reinforced its position among the world’s elite with another World Championship podium finish. The result extends the country’s consistent success at Olympic, World Championship and continental level, underlining the depth and maturity of a program that has established itself among the sport’s leading men’s épée nations.
