Petrojet Wins $22.7mn Jordan Gas Deal

Must read

Egypt’s state-owned Petrojet has secured a $22.7mn natural-gas infrastructure contract in Jordan, strengthening its regional order book as Cairo expands its petroleum-sector contractors into overseas markets.

Petrojet, in consortium with Jordan’s Ahmad Yousef Al-Tarawneh & Partner, will connect the Al-Muwaqqar industrial area, south of Amman, to the Arab Gas Pipeline through about 22km of new pipeline, alongside pressure-reduction, metering and related facilities. The project is scheduled for completion within 18 months.

The contract forms part of a wider $70mn programme financed by the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development to extend natural gas to Jordan’s Al-Muwaqqar and Al-Rawda industrial areas. Egyptian private-sector energy group TAQA Arabia secured the separate Al-Rawda project; its individual contract value has not been disclosed.

For Petrojet, the Jordan award is more significant as an export of engineering and construction services than as a gas-supply deal.

Egypt is seeking to turn capabilities developed through decades of domestic oil-and-gas investment into overseas business, expanding the regional footprint of petroleum-sector contractors and diversifying their project pipelines beyond the domestic market.

Jordan, meanwhile, expects greater industrial access to natural gas to reduce factory energy costs and improve competitiveness. Actual savings will depend on gas prices, conversion costs and manufacturers’ adoption of the new infrastructure.

At $22.7mn, the contract is relatively modest. The bigger commercial challenge is whether Petrojet can convert projects such as Al-Muwaqqar into repeat regional EPC business, turning Egypt’s established energy-engineering capabilities into a sustainable source of overseas revenues.
