South Korea’s H&L Egypt Apparel has doubled its planned investment in a new Egyptian sportswear factory to $30 million, targeting 2,000 direct jobs as Cairo seeks to expand foreign manufacturing investment and garment exports.
The company broke ground on the 42,000-square-metre facility in the West Qantara Industrial Zone on Tuesday, October 13, in a ceremony attended by Suez Canal Economic Zone (SCZONE) Chairman Mostafa Shaikhon and South Korean Ambassador Kim Wan-joong.
The project, initially agreed in November 2025 at $15 million, represents the first South Korean industrial investment contracted within SCZONE. The planned factory will employ advanced manufacturing technology and environmentally sustainable production methods to supply international markets.
SCZONE officials said West Qantara now hosts 54 industrial projects worth approximately $1.54 billion, involving investors from nine countries. Textiles and ready-made garments account for 43 projects, establishing the area as a growing manufacturing cluster.
Shaikhon said the investment reflected strengthening Egyptian-South Korean economic ties, while Ambassador Kim highlighted Egypt’s trade agreements and strategic location as advantages for Korean manufacturers seeking international market access.
The expanded investment signals growing confidence in Egypt’s potential as a competitive sportswear production base. Its longer-term economic contribution will depend on timely factory completion, export orders and the development of local supply chains.
