Elsewedy Electric is investing $100 million in two data-centre projects with Vodafone, marking a deeper push by the Egyptian industrial group into digital infrastructure as demand for cloud computing and artificial intelligence capacity accelerates.
Ahmed El Sewedy said the investment represents an initial commitment and could support wider expansion in African markets.
The move comes as Vodafone Business, Elsewedy Electric and Cassava Technologies establish Africa Data Centres Egypt, a platform expected to begin with around 20 MW of capacity and expand to as much as 200 MW. Total investment in the full build-out could reach $1 billion, including about $200 million in foreign direct investment during the first phase.
The venture will target Egyptian companies, international technology groups, cloud providers and hyperscalers, combining power infrastructure, connectivity and data-centre capacity in a market seeking to strengthen its position as a regional digital hub.
Separately, Vodafone Business and Cassava Technologies are developing Egypt’s first sovereign AI infrastructure platform, using Nvidia accelerated computing to enable companies and government institutions to process sensitive AI workloads domestically.
For Elsewedy, the investment signals a broader shift in capital allocation. The group is extending beyond conventional power and industrial infrastructure into data-intensive assets where electricity availability, connectivity and computing capacity are increasingly becoming competitive advantages in attracting technology investment.
