CAIRO — Egypt has raised the operating efficiency of its domestic refineries to 80% from 66%, strengthening the country’s ability to process more crude locally and reduce dependence on imported petroleum products, Petroleum and Mineral Resources Minister Karim Badawi said.
The increase reflects tighter coordination between the Egyptian General Petroleum Corporation (EGPC) and state-owned refining companies, allowing more crude to be processed through existing capacity as Egypt seeks to contain its energy import bill and conserve foreign currency.
Badawi made the remarks during the general assembly of Cairo Oil Refining Company, which approved results for fiscal year 2025/26.
Company Chairman Tarek Abdel Latif said Cairo Refining processed more than 7.5mn tonnes of crude at its Mostorod and Tanta refineries during the year.
The company also blended, prepared and supplied around 2.79mn tonnes of 80- and 92-octane gasoline, equivalent to approximately 34% of Egypt’s domestic consumption of the two grades.
Cairo Refining’s revenues rose 22% year on year, supported by higher operating rates, production and services provided to other petroleum-sector companies.
The company also completed a major overhaul of its gasoline complex using internal engineering and technical capabilities, covering 10 production units and six power stations, alongside the rehabilitation and restart of two steam boilers for Alexandria Petroleum Company.
The results underline Egypt’s broader strategy of extracting more value from existing refining infrastructure: higher refinery utilisation can translate directly into greater domestic fuel availability, lower import requirements and reduced pressure on hard-currency demand.
