Oman Investment Authority has expanded its exposure to the global space industry through an investment in Spanish launch-vehicle developer PLD Space, strengthening the link between Omani sovereign capital and the Sultanate’s emerging aerospace ambitions.
The investment was made indirectly through the Spain-Oman Private Equity Fund II, backed by OIA and Spain’s state-linked investment company COFIDES. The fund participated in PLD Space’s latest Series C financing, which lifted the company’s total Series C funding to €288 million. The value of the Oman-linked investment was not disclosed.
Founded in 2011, PLD Space is developing the MIURA 5 orbital launcher for small satellites, following the successful flight of its MIURA 1 technology demonstrator.
PLD Space has also selected Etlaq Spaceport in Duqm as its second international launch location. That decision is confirmed, as is Oman’s continued development of Etlaq under its national space programme and the conduct of launch-related test activity from the site.
Commercial MIURA 5 operations from Duqm, however, remain at the planning stage. No firm launch schedule has been announced, and operations remain subject to MIURA 5 entering service, regulatory approvals, infrastructure readiness, technical qualification and customer demand.
OIA already has exposure to SpaceX, but the PLD Space investment carries a more direct potential link to Oman’s domestic industrial strategy through the company’s planned presence in Duqm.
Should commercial launches proceed, the project could support activity in ground services, logistics, engineering, testing and specialised aerospace manufacturing.
The current position is therefore defined by a confirmed Oman-linked investment in PLD Space and a confirmed Duqm site selection, while regular MIURA 5 launches and broader industrial localisation in Oman remain prospective rather than operational.
