Egypt’s US Treasury Holdings Surge Nearly Tenfold to $1.61 Billion

Must read

Egypt-attributed holdings of long-term US Treasury securities surged 873.3% year-on-year to $1.606 billion in August 2026, compared with $165 million a year earlier, according to US Treasury data released on 16 October.

Holdings rose $497 million, or 44.8%, from July’s $1.109 billion, marking the second major increase this year.

The first occurred in January, when holdings jumped from $171 million in December to $1.160 billion. They subsequently remained near $1.1 billion through July before August’s renewed expansion.

The increase coincided with Egypt’s net international reserves rising to $57.215 billion in August from $56.294 billion in July, according to the Central Bank of Egypt. The reserve growth was largely supported by higher gold valuations, while foreign-currency holdings declined.

The US Treasury figures measure securities attributed to investors resident in Egypt, rather than exclusively to the central bank. They do not identify the ultimate investors or establish that the increase reflects a change in official reserve-management policy.

The expansion may indicate changes in dollar-asset allocation or institutional liquidity management, although the underlying investment decisions remain undisclosed.

Despite the sharp increase, Egypt accounted for approximately 0.017% of the $9.33 trillion in foreign US Treasury holdings in August, making the scale of its domestic portfolio expansion more significant than its position in the global market.
