Telecom Egypt has been named North Africa’s fastest fixed broadband provider for the first half of 2026 by global internet performance specialist Ookla, reinforcing its regional standing as the company prepares to accelerate a nationwide fibre-optic network upgrade.
The award, covering the first two quarters of 2026, was presented during the Network X conference in Vienna, held from 13 to 15 October. Ookla President and CEO Stephen Bye presented the distinction to Telecom Egypt Managing Director and CEO Tamer El Mahdi.
Based on user-initiated tests conducted through Ookla’s Speedtest platform, the award comes as Telecom Egypt implements a five-year investment strategy for 2026–2030 to replace traditional copper connections with high-speed fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) technology.
The programme targets millions of fibre connections, increasing network capacity, improving service reliability and preparing Egypt’s digital infrastructure for growing demand from cloud computing, artificial intelligence and data-intensive businesses.
The expansion is supported by stronger financial performance. Telecom Egypt reported a 17% rise in first-half revenue to EGP59.2bn, while data revenue increased 26% and fixed-broadband subscriptions grew 9% year on year.
El Mahdi said the recognition reflected the impact of sustained network investment and the company’s ambition to translate improved connectivity into wider economic opportunities.
Beyond the award, the challenge is extending high-speed, affordable and reliable broadband across Egypt. Successful execution could strengthen business productivity, attract digital investment and support the country’s ambition to become a regional technology and AI hub.
