Healthcare investment, digital transformation and tourism integration are positioning Egypt to compete for a larger share of the Middle East and Africa’s growing medical tourism market.
Medical tourism has become one of the world’s fastest-growing healthcare industries as patients increasingly travel abroad seeking high-quality treatment, shorter waiting times and affordable care. Countries such as Thailand, India, Türkiye and the UAE have built major industries by combining internationally accredited healthcare with strong tourism infrastructure. Egypt is now seeking to establish itself as a regional competitor by leveraging its expanding healthcare system, strategic location and tourism sector.
The country’s ambitions are beginning to translate into measurable results.
In March 2026, the General Authority for Healthcare (GAH) reported providing medical and therapeutic services to around 35,000 international patients from 124 countries, generating cumulative revenues of approximately US$8 million. Medical tourism revenues reached about US$3.7 million during 2025, representing annual growth of 76.7%, reflecting rising international demand and government efforts to organize the sector.
Building on Competitive Advantages
Egypt enters the medical tourism market with several structural strengths. Its large pool of physicians, expanding network of public and private hospitals, specialized medical services and established tourism industry provide a solid foundation. Its location at the crossroads of Africa, the Middle East and Europe also offers convenient access for regional patients.
Treatment costs are generally lower than in many European and Gulf markets, while patients can combine specialist care with internationally renowned cultural attractions and coastal resorts. Egypt’s strengths span specialties commonly associated with medical tourism, including oncology, cardiology, orthopaedics, ophthalmology, fertility treatment, cosmetic surgery and rehabilitation.
Digital Healthcare Supports Growth
In January 2026, the GAH launched the “In Egypt We Care” digital platforms to connect international patients with accredited healthcare providers and manage the patient journey from initial consultations through treatment and post-care follow-up.
The initiative reflects a broader shift toward digital healthcare, allowing patients to access medical information, appointments and follow-up services before and after travelling.
Investment Expands the Ecosystem
Egypt is also investing in dedicated medical tourism infrastructure.
In 2025, the General Authority for Investment and Free Zones (GAFI) announced plans for Egypt’s first medical tourism investment zone, expected to begin operations in May 2026.
The 40-feddan development in Giza is designed to integrate hospitals, rehabilitation centres, hotels and wellness facilities, strengthening links between healthcare, hospitality and tourism while encouraging domestic and foreign investment.
Connecting Healthcare and Tourism
In April 2026, the Ministries of Health and Tourism agreed on a joint strategy to improve healthcare standards across hotels and tourist destinations. Planned measures include a unified digital pricing system for medical services, enhanced medical support in hotel clinics, improved hygiene standards and faster healthcare assistance for visitors.
Egypt is also promoting the national “Tour n’ Cure” platform, enabling international patients to identify accredited healthcare providers and access transparent treatment information.
Regional Potential, Global Competition
Egypt’s geographic position and expanding healthcare infrastructure give it the potential to serve growing demand across both Africa and the Middle East. In June 2026, Egypt and Kenya discussed expanding cooperation in cancer care, rare diseases, medical education and medical tourism through Egypt’s “Tour 4 Cure” initiative.
However, competition remains intense. Established destinations such as Türkiye, India, Thailand and the UAE have spent years building internationally recognised healthcare brands supported by global accreditation, multilingual services and international insurance partnerships.
An Emerging Medical Tourism Industry
Egypt already possesses many of the ingredients needed to become a regional medical tourism destination: skilled healthcare professionals, expanding hospital infrastructure, digital health initiatives, tourism assets and growing investment.
Whether it becomes one of the Middle East’s leading medical tourism hubs will depend on its ability to consistently deliver internationally competitive quality, seamless patient experiences and continued investment. Recent reforms suggest Egypt is moving beyond individual healthcare services toward building an integrated medical tourism ecosystem.
